Perched high on the Great Escarpment of Mpumalanga, where cold mountain mists roll across sweeping grasslands, lies the Highlands Meander. This tranquil region, anchored by the high-altitude towns of Dullstroom, Belfast, Machadodorp, and Lydenburg, offers a refreshing retreat from the heat of the Lowveld below.

Characterised by crisp air, pine plantations, and clear trout streams, it is a countryside destination that rewards slow exploration and outdoor recreation.

The town of Dullstroom serves as the cultural heart of the Meander. Standing at over 2,000 metres above sea level, it is one of the highest settlements in South Africa and renowned as the country's premier fly-fishing capital.

Stocked dams and pristine rivers attract anglers from across the globe keen to test their skills against rainbow and brown trout. Beyond the water, Dullstroom features stone cottages, cosy fireplaces, craft breweries, and artisanal eateries serving pan-fried trout and warm pancakes on overcast afternoons.

Art, heritage, and outdoor adventure blend seamlessly across the region. At Waterval Boven (Emgwenya), dramatic quartzite cliffs draw rock climbers to world-class crags overlooking the Elands River valley. History enthusiasts can explore old railway tunnels and Anglo-Boer War battlefields, while nature lovers seek out the rare blue crane, wattled crane, and grey-crowned crane that breed in the surrounding highveld wetlands.

Driving the R540 through the Highlands Meander reveals a serene landscape where time seems to slow down. Whether spent casting a line into a quiet dam, hiking through misty hills, or enjoying fine food beside a log fire, this high-altitude haven remains one of South Africa's most charming countryside escapes.

Antjie Somers
Welkom. Ek is Anchen Coetzee. Ek skryf al gedigte vandat ek ‘n kind is. Die gedigte op hierdie kanaal is tussen 1985 en 2023 geskryf en gepubliseer onder Antjie Somers, Annie Vannie Kaap of onder my eie naam. Elke woord is my eie. Welkom in my wêreld. - Anchen Coetzee
