A caravan represents freedom, comfort, and the promise of endless weekend escapes. Yet, the longevity of your home on wheels is decided not during the sunny weeks spent at the coast, but during the quiet months it spends parked in your driveway or garage.

Proper maintenance during the off-season is vital to ensure your next holiday starts with a smile rather than a costly repair bill.

Moisture is the single greatest threat to a parked caravan. Before storing it away, wash the exterior thoroughly to remove road grime, salt, and dust. Inspect all window seals and joints for tiny cracks where water could seep in during heavy summer downpours. Inside, leave the fridge door slightly open to prevent mould, and place moisture-absorbing crystals in the main cabin to keep the air dry and fresh.

Tyre care is equally important. When a caravan sits in one position for months, the tyres can develop flat spots, weakening the rubber and leading to dangerous blowouts on the highway. If possible, jack up the caravan and support it on axle stands, or park it on tyre-saver mats. Remember to inflate the tyres slightly above their normal pressure to help them keep their shape.

Do not forget the electrical system. Disconnect the caravan battery to prevent it from draining completely, and connect it to an intelligent trickle charger once a month to maintain its health. Finally, invest in a high-quality, breathable caravan cover. Avoid cheap plastic tarpaulins, which trap condensation underneath and can damage the paintwork.

A little preventative care during the off-season ensures that when the open road calls, your caravan is immediately ready to roll.
