When the family vehicle is fully loaded and there is still a mountain of gear left in the driveway, you face a classic transport dilemma. Do you opt for a sleek roof rack, or do you hitch up a sturdy trailer?

Both options have their dedicated supporters, and the right choice depends entirely on your vehicle, your destination, and your style of travel.

Roof racks are highly favoured for their simplicity and ease of movement. Modern roof boxes are aerodynamically designed, offering secure, weatherproof storage without changing the footprint of your car.

This is a massive advantage when navigating tight city streets, parking garages, or winding mountain passes. You do not have to worry about reversing a trailer or paying extra tolls at highway plazas.

However, they do have drawbacks. A roof box increases wind resistance, which can noticeably raise your fuel consumption. It also changes the centre of gravity, requiring more cautious driving in strong crosswinds, which are common in the Western Cape.

Trailers, on the other hand, offer unmatched capacity. If you are heading into the bushveld or planning an extended camping trip, a trailer allows you to pack heavy gas bottles, large coolers, and bulky canvas tents with ease. It removes all weight from the roof of your vehicle, protecting your suspension and preserving the interior space for passenger comfort.

The downside is that towing requires a higher level of driving skill, especially when reversing or navigating muddy off-road tracks. You must also maintain additional tyres, bearings, and licensed paperwork.

Ultimately, if you are packing light for a resort holiday, a roof rack is ideal. If you are self-catering in the wild, the trailer remains king.

The town built around a monthly journey to church
The church standing today is the grand successor to the modest building around which Calitzdorp first formed. The reason for the town’s emergence is wonderfully practical: people needed somewhere closer to gather, and Calitzdorp grew from that need, one returning wagon at a time.
