Five towns in South Africa you'll never forget

Forget rushing between South Africa's major cities. These smaller towns offer history, mountains, forests, art and character.

South Africa's cities are impressive, but some of the country's strongest travel memories are made in places small enough to explore on foot. The following five towns each have a personality that is difficult to replicate. They are not simply convenient stops between bigger destinations. They are destinations in their own right.

Clarens, Free State

Between the Rooiberge and Maluti Mountains, Clarens combines sandstone buildings, galleries, restaurants and outdoor adventure. Golden Gate Highlands National Park is only about 20 kilometres away, while the nearby Ash River attracts white-water rafting enthusiasts.

Clarens is particularly good for travellers who like their weekends divided between a long breakfast, an art gallery and an unnecessarily ambitious outdoor activity.

Graaff-Reinet, Eastern Cape

Founded in 1786, Graaff-Reinet is the fourth-oldest town in South Africa and one of the country's most rewarding historical destinations. More than 200 heritage buildings contribute to its character, while Camdeboo National Park surrounds the town.

The Valley of Desolation provides the dramatic backdrop, but the town itself deserves time. Walk the streets, visit the museums and allow the Karoo atmosphere to do its work.

Hogsback, Eastern Cape

Hogsback feels as though somebody designed a village specifically for people who like forests, waterfalls and stories about fairies. High in the Amathole Mountains, the town is known for its gardens, art and hiking trails.

The surrounding forest and mist have also inspired decades of Tolkien comparisons, although the often-repeated claim that Hogsback directly inspired Middle-earth remains unproven. The Xhosa name Qabimbola connects the area to the cultural heritage of the Amathole Mountains.

Pilgrim's Rest, Mpumalanga

Pilgrim's Rest is a living reminder of the gold-rush era. The entire historic village forms part of the attraction, with preserved buildings and stories from the late nineteenth-century goldfields.

Situated along the Panorama Route, it pairs naturally with a journey through Mpumalanga's mountains and waterfalls.

Prince Albert, Western Cape

At the foot of the Swartberg Pass, Prince Albert offers a very different kind of South African charm. The Great Karoo town is known for its historic Cape Dutch, Victorian and Karoo architecture, local food and wide-open surroundings.

The Swartberg Pass connects the Great Karoo and Klein Karoo, making Prince Albert an excellent stop for travellers who enjoy scenery with a strong sense of place.

These towns are memorable because they have not tried too hard to become something else.

Their histories remain visible. Their landscapes shape their identities. Their best attractions often involve simply walking slowly enough to notice them.

Zoid Spawn and the one-life rule
I went to church to watch Karen Zoid sing French under Super Mario graphics and left with an existential crisis. Not quite what I had on the evening’s bingo card, but was I disappointed? Absolutely not.
