South Africa's coastline offers plenty of choice for a summer holiday, whether you prefer long walks on the beach, seafood beside a working harbour or exploring the natural attractions around a seaside town. From the Atlantic shores of the Western Cape to the subtropical coast of KwaZulu-Natal, these seven destinations offer different experiences for holidaymakers.

Paternoster, Western Cape

About 145 km north-west of Cape Town, Paternoster is a traditional West Coast fishing village known for its whitewashed cottages, sandy streets and colourful fishing boats. Fishing remains part of daily life here, although the village is also a popular holiday destination.

Visitors can walk along Langstrand, explore Cape Columbine Nature Reserve or enjoy a seafood meal at one of the local restaurants. The Atlantic water can be cold, even in summer, so it's worth packing something warm.

Hermanus, Western Cape

Hermanus is best known for its whale watching, but there's plenty to do outside the whale season. The town's well-known cliff path follows the coastline overlooking Walker Bay, passing rocky coves and several viewpoints where visitors can stop to enjoy the scenery.

Southern right whales generally visit between June and November, so summer visitors can spend their time on the beaches, walking mountain trails or visiting nearby wine farms. Hermanus also has a selection of restaurants serving local produce.

Knysna, Western Cape

Knysna combines a sheltered lagoon, indigenous forests and the imposing sandstone cliffs known as the Knysna Heads. Visitors can take a boat trip on the lagoon, browse the waterfront or explore the surrounding forest trails.

The town is also a convenient base for exploring the Garden Route, with beaches and nature reserves nearby. Knysna is particularly well known for its oysters, which are served at local restaurants when available.

Jeffreys Bay, Eastern Cape

Jeffreys Bay has an international reputation for surfing, with waves that attract experienced surfers from around the world. Beginners can book lessons and find beaches better suited to their abilities.

You don't have to surf to enjoy the town, though. Its beaches are popular for walking, while cafés and surfwear shops form part of the local holiday scene. Watching the surfers is an attraction in itself.

Coffee Bay, Eastern Cape

Coffee Bay, on the Wild Coast, is a good choice for travellers who prefer natural scenery to developed holiday facilities. Green hills slope towards secluded beaches, and much of the surrounding coastline can be explored on foot.

The nearby Hole in the Wall, a natural rock formation close to the Mpako River, is a popular excursion. Road conditions can be challenging, so visitors should check their routes before travelling and allow enough time for the journey.

Port Alfred, Eastern Cape

Port Alfred, along the Eastern Cape's Sunshine Coast, offers sandy beaches, a river mouth and a quieter holiday atmosphere. The Kowie River provides opportunities for boating and paddling, while the surrounding coastline is suitable for long walks.

The town is a good option for families and couples looking for a relaxed seaside holiday with access to outdoor activities.

St Lucia, KwaZulu-Natal

St Lucia offers a coastal holiday with opportunities for wildlife viewing. Situated beside the St Lucia estuary, the town is known for boat excursions where visitors may see hippos, crocodiles and a variety of waterbirds.

The town also lies beside iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors should be particularly careful after dark, as hippos sometimes move through residential areas.

Planning your coastal holiday

These destinations cater for different interests, from surfing and wildlife excursions to beach walks and seaside restaurants. Accommodation should be booked early for December and January, particularly if you want to stay close to the beach.

Check swimming conditions daily, use beaches with lifeguards wherever possible and take precautions against the summer sun.
