Mozambique's coastline has long enchanted travellers with its turquoise waters and swaying palms, yet its interior national parks represent some of the most inspiring conservation recovery stories in modern Africa.

Following decades of historical conflict, massive restoration initiatives have revived these wilderness areas, transforming them into prime destinations for safari enthusiasts seeking raw, untamed beauty.

At the heart of this ecological rebirth is Gorongosa National Park, situated at the southern end of the Great East African Rift Valley in Sofala Province. Once considered one of the densest wildlife havens on the continent, Gorongosa has undergone a dramatic transformation led by the Mozambican government and the Carr Foundation.

Today, its lush floodplains, fever tree forests, and palm savannas are once again thriving with large herds of waterbuck, elephant, lion, and reintroduced wild dog. Staying at Chitengo Camp provides an ideal base for game drives and boat safaris along Lake Urema, where birdlife proliferates in astonishing numbers.

Further south lies the Zinave National Park, anchored along the banks of the Save River in Inhambane Province. As part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area, Zinave has benefited from extensive wildlife translocation programs, welcoming black and white rhino back to its wilderness alongside giraffe, buffalo, and wildebeest. The park offers an untouched bushveld experience characterised by towering baobab trees and quiet, uncrowded tracks.

Near the South African border, the Maputo National Park (formerly the Maputo Special Reserve) presents a breathtaking synthesis of coastal ecosystems and terrestrial wildlife. Here, rolling coastal dunes, inland freshwater lakes, and swamp forests merge directly into the Indian Ocean.

Visitors can spot elephant herds browsing in coastal thickets during the morning and track humpback whales or dolphins along the beaches by afternoon. Mozambique’s national parks offer a vibrant, deeply rewarding alternative to conventional safari circuits.

Women: The strength that carries the world
From the very beginning of humanity, women have been life-givers, nurturers, teachers, protectors and builders of families and communities.
Can you travel through the Karoo without using the N1
Travelling without the N1 is entirely possible. The reward is the chance to see the towns that the shortcut leaves behind.
What a food recall means after the product is already in your kitchen
A food recall is easy to dismiss until you recognise the name on something in your fridge or cupboard. Knowing what to check next can help you work out whether the warning applies to what you bought.
Antjie Somers
Welkom. Ek is Anchen Coetzee. Ek skryf al gedigte vandat ek ‘n kind is. Die gedigte op hierdie kanaal is tussen 1985 en 2023 geskryf en gepubliseer onder Antjie Somers, Annie Vannie Kaap of onder my eie naam. Elke woord is my eie. Welkom in my wêreld. - Anchen Coetzee
