For years, the process of crossing South Africa’s borders involved the familiar ritual of filling out paper customs forms while standing in a crowded airport terminal or border post queue. However, that era has officially come to an end.

The South African Revenue Service, known widely as SARS, has modernised its border compliance, introducing a digital system that changes how we prepare for international travel.

As of July 1, travellers entering or leaving South Africa are required to submit their customs declarations online before they travel. This new system, managed through the South African Traveller Management System (SATMS), replaces the old manual paperwork with a streamlined digital portal.

Whether you are arriving at OR Tambo International Airport, crossing a land border, or departing by sea, you must complete this declaration ahead of time.

The submission must be completed online within 24 hours of your departure. This can be done via the SARS website, the dedicated SATMS mobile app, or by scanning quick-response codes available at the ports of entry.

The declaration covers any goods you are carrying, gifts, business equipment, and currency. Notably, travellers can carry up to R100,000 in cash without needing prior approval, but anything exceeding this limit must be declared.

While travellers will not be turned away if they fail to complete the form beforehand, completing it in advance ensures a much smoother transition through customs. It is highly recommended to add this quick digital step to your travel checklist alongside your passport and visa preparations.

Why a qualified gas installer is essential for your home’s safety
Gas is a convenient option for South African homes, but safety starts with the installation. Using a qualified, registered domestic installer helps ensure that the system is fitted correctly, tested properly and supported by the required Certificate of Conformity.

Rural young people are often told that opportunity lies elsewhere, usually in a city, usually through a university route. For some, that will be true. For others, the better opportunity may be closer to home.
The holiday where the journey becomes the destination
Unlike traditional accommodation, a houseboat is more than just a place to sleep. It combines transport, accommodation and recreation into one experience, allowing travellers to explore at their own pace while remaining surrounded by nature.
