With lots of holidaymakers getting ready to return home in the next few days, it is time to consider more safety measures to ensure a safe arrival.

While regular stops are recommended, fuel stations and rest areas can be incredibly busy during holiday periods. While these stops are necessary for refuelling, stretching and refreshment, they also attract opportunistic criminals. Awareness and simple precautions help travellers stay safe.

Choose well-known, busy fuel stations whenever possible. Locations along major highways often have better lighting, cameras and visible staff. Avoid stopping in isolated areas unless it is an emergency.

Security begins before you even leave the vehicle. Keep bags, phones and valuables out of sight. Do not leave items on seats or dashboards. Lock the doors when stepping out, even if you are only walking a few steps away. Criminals look for quick opportunities, and an unlocked door makes theft easy.

Paying for fuel requires attention. Use your card only when the attendant is present and never hand it over without watching the transaction. Shield your PIN and keep your card in sight at all times. Mobile payment options can reduce risk, but remain alert.

Parents should keep children close. Busy stations have moving vehicles, blind spots and crowds. Designate a meeting point in case someone becomes separated and remind children not to wander off.

When stopping for food or rest, choose areas with clear visibility and good lighting. Sit where you can see your vehicle. Avoid displaying expensive gadgets or leaving belongings unattended.

Small precautions make a big difference. Travellers who stay aware and choose safe facilities enjoy a smoother, more relaxed journey during the busy season.
