Travelling with children can be joyful, chaotic and surprisingly memorable. Road trips across Southern Africa offer families a chance to share landscapes, wildlife sightings and new experiences.

The challenge is keeping young travellers comfortable and entertained during long hours on the road. With a little preparation, the journey can become just as enjoyable as the destination.

Comfort begins with seating. Ensure that child seats are properly installed and correctly sized for your child. Comfortable seating positions make a large difference during long travel days.

Pack light blankets, small pillows and familiar comfort items. Children settle more easily when they have something familiar with them.

Snacks are another key part of road trip success. Offer a mix of healthy options and small treats. Fruits, nuts, crackers and sandwiches keep hunger at bay without creating unnecessary mess.

Avoid very sugary snacks that lead to bursts of energy followed by tired frustration. Hydration is important, so pack water in spill-proof bottles.

Entertainment works best when it is varied. Screens can be helpful in moderation, but should not be the only option. Download offline movies or educational shows and alternate these with low-tech activities.

Audiobooks are excellent for family listening and keep everyone focused on the same story. Older children may enjoy travel journals where they capture sights, sketches and thoughts from the journey.

Creative games help time pass quickly. Classic road trip games like spotting certain car colours, counting animal sightings or finding letters of the alphabet on number plates keep children engaged without any additional equipment.

Map-based games allow older children to track progress and learn about the regions they are travelling through.

Regular stops are essential. Plan gentle pauses at picnic sites, fuel stations, viewpoints and towns. Children need to stretch, move and release energy. These breaks also give parents room to regroup and prepare for the next stage of the journey. Choose stops with safe play areas whenever possible.

Involving children in the journey creates excitement. Tell them about the destination, the route and the highlights they will encounter. Young travellers respond well when they feel included and informed.

A family road trip can be a happy and relaxed experience when needs are anticipated, and comfort is prioritised. The small moments of laughter, singing and shared snacks often become the holiday memories that last the longest.
