Before setting off on holiday, take time to ensure your vehicle is road-trip ready.

The open road promises freedom, discovery and the excitement of a well-earned break. Yet many holiday journeys begin with a simple mistake: assuming the vehicle is ready for hundreds or even thousands of kilometres without a proper inspection.
A few days before departure is the ideal time to conduct a thorough safety check. Tyres deserve first attention. Tread depth, tyre pressure and overall condition directly affect handling, braking and fuel consumption. Drivers should not forget the spare wheel, which often remains untouched for months.

Fluids are equally important. Engine oil, coolant, brake fluid and windscreen washer levels should all be checked and topped up where necessary. South Africa's summer heat can place additional strain on engines, particularly during long-distance travel.
The battery often becomes an overlooked weak point. A battery nearing the end of its lifespan may function normally during short daily trips but fail unexpectedly on holiday. Checking terminals for corrosion and testing battery health can prevent roadside frustration.
Lights and wipers play a critical safety role, particularly during summer thunderstorms. Every indicator, brake light and headlamp should work correctly. Windscreen wipers must clear water effectively without streaking or smearing.
Drivers towing trailers or caravans should inspect tow hitches, safety chains and electrical connections. These components face significant stress during long journeys and require careful attention.
Emergency equipment also matters. A first-aid kit, warning triangle, torch and basic tool kit provide valuable support if problems arise. Keeping drinking water in the vehicle can prove equally useful during unexpected delays.
Many South Africans spend weeks planning accommodation and activities while giving little thought to vehicle preparation. A simple inspection routine dramatically reduces the risk of breakdowns and helps ensure that holiday memories focus on destinations rather than repair workshops.
The road ahead should feel exciting, not uncertain. A few preventative checks can make all the difference.
